Hand-made paper construction, and a tipped-in black-and-white portrait of James Simmons, Master Paper Maker of Haslemere 1831 - 1868, at frontis. Selections edited and annotated by the two editors, multiple appendices of the Simmons pedigree, the chronology of paper mills, and then the construction of the diaries. Foreword by W.J.D. Cooper, and with scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. This work comprises a fascinating account of the business affairs of a struggling country papermaker in England during the years 1831-1868. In particular, they do much to illustrate the transition to steam power for converting rags into pulp, during a period of time when traditional paper-makers were being rapidly replaced by paper-making machines.
